How to Become a Chef in New Jersey

Requirements for Becoming a Chef in New Jersey
There are no nationwide regulations in place for this career field. State legislation is also not in place for the cooking profession. In most cases, a high school diploma or GED will help you land an entry-level food service position. If you want to become a chef, though, you will either need to work your way through the ranks by practicing under executive chefs, or you can enroll in a post-secondary education program. Depending on the city in which you choose to work, you may need to obtain a food handler’s license in order to work as a cook or chef. This comes in the form of a permit or card, which can be obtained online for less than $30.
New Jersey Schools for Chefs
Although completing a post-secondary training program in culinary arts is not a requirement by law, it will be a great way to develop your skills and acquire knowledge that you may not learn outside of a curriculum-based training program.
- Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences is located in the city of New Brunswick, New Jersey, and offers a Bachelor of Science degree in food science research. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data, there will be a 14.7 percent expansion in the job market for chefs in New Jersey during the 10-year period between 2016 and 2026.
