Job Outlook

As of May 2016, as stated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there were approximately 335,850 people working as head chefs, chefs and other cooks in California. Additionally, there were 30,330 persons employed as bakers, and an additional 108,830 employed as food preparation workers. There were 35,100 working as food service managers. It is expected that, in the decade to 2024, jobs for cooks in the golden state will grow by 20.4%.

Cooks and Chef Salaries in California

In 2016, the mean annual salary for chefs working in restaurants in the nation’s most populous state was $28,200 (BLS), or approximately $13.56 per hour. Chefs and experienced senior cooks made a mean annual salary of $49,810 in the same year, and baking and pastry chefs made $28,410 or $13.66 per hour.
